9 new and returning Afrikaans shows to watch

Wie Word ‘n Miljoenêr?

Over the past four seasons of kykNET’s popular quiz show Wie Word ’n Miljoenêr?, fans at home have been shouting answers at their screens as contestants fumbled their way through the climb toward the R1 million question. Only one contestant has managed to walk away with the full R1 million: Herman Bosman, a flower farmer from George, who used his final lifeline – his mother – in episode 12 of S4.

Net Mens

The SAFTA-nominated documentary series Net Mens returns for its third season, and this time, it tells the deeply personal and powerful stories of three extraordinary South African women. Singers Karlien van Jaarsveld and Amandra Strydom talk about their miscarriages, while in the third episode actress Hanna Grobler shares the story of her stillborn son. The popular actor Reynardt Hugo returns as the executive producer and director.

Magda Louw

Directed by Johannes Pieter Nel (Koek), Magda Louw tells the story of a middle-aged Afrikaans woman and her husband who agree to participate in a reality series where a camera crew follows them to document their day-to-day life. As Magda, series creator Desiré Gardner won Best Actress in a Comedy at the 2024 kykNET Silwerskerm Awards for the second year in a row. Hannes van Wyk was up for Best Actor as her husband, Erhard, with Gershwin Mias nominated for Supporting Actor as cameraman Shaun, who follows the Louws around and creeps deep into Magda's heart.

Govan Ontbloot

Govan Ontbloot is an honest, human exploration of extraordinary South African stories, presented by Carte Blanche presenter Govan Whittles. Each of the nine episodes reveals a world most of us have never seen, from the dreams of an Afrikaner cultural community in Kleinfontein outside Pretoria, to the world of Afrikaans swingers, to Namakwaland to see how the diggers are faring who were exploited as pawns in Louis Liebenberg’s alleged diamond scheme fraud.

Pronk Primêr

Welcome to Pronk Primêr, a small-town primary school where former pupil Ada Benade gets a job as a maths teacher, working alongside some of her former schoolmates … and Principal Welgehawe, who’s still in his post after all these years. Juanita de Villiers (Maryna in Reënboogrant and Jana in Getroud met Rugby) stars as Ada, with SAFTA-nominated screen legend Tobie Cronjé (Binnelanders, Hans Steek die Rubicon Oor) as Principal Welgehawe. The cast also includes the likes of Pietie Beyers (Eksie Perfeksie, Skemerson) and Solomon Cupido (Die Kwiksilwers, Pad na jou Hart).

Elders: Ligtoringroete

In the seventh season of the SAFTA-winning Elders, hiker and author Erns Grundling walks the new 340km Lighthouse Route between the iconic lighthouses of Mossel Bay and Cape Agulhas. The hike normally takes 17 days, but Erns and the Bonanza Films team spent a month on the route, as this season also includes several excursions in the area. Guests this season include comedian Nik Rabinowitz, writer and director Bibi Slippers, and TV personalities Frazer Barry, Hamilton Wessels, Johan Badenhorst, Lindie Stander and Lynthie Jaars.

Kom Ons Braai: Celebs

Strap in for a brand-new season of the fan-favourite cooking reality show, where two households host braais against one another for points and prizes. But what happens when two surprise celebrity guests join in the fun and help score their efforts?

Die Mommy Club: Van Die Hoofstad

The third instalment of the franchise showcased five powerhouse moms who are redefining the art of balancing parenting, power, and prestige – all while leaning on their close-knit families to raise the next generation, and became Showmax’s most-watched Afrikaans title since relaunch. Produced by franchise creators POP24, The Mommy Club: Van Die Hoofstad introduced a bold, dynamic cast of Afrikaans women who aren’t afraid to show their vulnerability: Ansu Viljoen, Crystal Van Der Burgh, Johandri Johnson, Louise Volschenk, and Tessa Tullues.

Een Keer Om Die Son

Een Keer Om Die Son follows the lives of one family over the course of a calendar year, charting their ups and downs when tragedy strikes and everything changes overnight. Already renewed for a second season, the kykNET drama series is co-created by Ivan Botha and DonnaLee Roberts, the team behind blockbusters like Pad Na Jou Hart and Vir Altyd.
