The FA Cup has reached the quarterfinal stage, with four matches spread over Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March. The action opens on Saturday afternoon with Wolverhampton Wanderers welcoming second-tier Coventry City to Molineux Stadium, before Manchester City tackle Newcastle United in the first all-Premier League clash.

The Citizens, the defending FA Cup champions, will back themselves to take down the Magpies on home soil, with the added motivation of avenging their loss to the team in black and white in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

“Newcastle who will be the fourth time we play them this season to reach the semifinal of the FA Cup,” said City manager Pep Guardiola. “We work so far to arrive here and live these kinds of moments. We try to do our best. These are the best [matches].”

Sunday afternoon opens with a clash between top-flight Chelsea and second-tier Leicester City – with the clash given extra significance by the Foxes’ famous triumph over the Blues in the final of this competition back in 2021.

While Leicester look set for a successful season regardless of what happens in this match (the Foxes are strong favourites to secure one of the two direct promotion slots back to the Premier League), Chelsea desperately need something to cling to in a roller-coaster season.

“The expectation is massive because we are Chelsea but this team needs to build and build the confidence. The unity is starting to grow, it's not magic, you can't just create it,” said Blues boss Maurico Pochettino.

The quarterfinals will be wrapped up late on Sunday afternoon with a classic: Manchester United and Liverpool will renew their rivalry at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are looking for redemption, having lost the FA Cup final to City last season, while the Reds are motivated by emotion, as they look to give a grand send off to manager Jurgen Klopp, who is leaving the club at the end of the season. And above all of this is an enormous amount of history between these two regional rivals and heavyweights of the game.

“It's a massive one, and over the years it has always been difficult games and great atmospheres in both stadiums. I respect what they are doing so it is a big game,” said Klopp.

“We've got Liverpool at home now, it's a fantastic draw, we're looking forward to it,” said United manager Erik ten Hag.
